Intelligence reports coming from North-East Nigeria where Nigeria's
Military, alongside allied forces from neighboring countries are currently
engaging Boko Haram islamists, indicate that 36 towns have so far been retaken
from Boko Haram since the start of the recent campaign.
National security spokesman Mike Omeri said four towns had fallen since
last Friday, including three in Borno state and Buni Yadi, in neighbouring Yobe
state, where the insurgents slaughtered more than 40 students in February last
year before seizing it in August.
Crucial "cooperation
and alliances" have led to victories over the Islamist rebels, he said,
thanking neighbouring Cameroon, Chad and Niger for cutting off "the supply
lines of the terrorists".
"It is hoped that the
unfolding regional cooperation will hasten the total defeat and extermination
of Boko Haram in Nigeria and the sub-region," he added.
Speaking at the Atlantic Council think-tank in Washington, the head of
Nigeria's National Intelligence Agency, Ayodele Oke, said the militants still
controlled four local government areas.
He said he was optimistic
that in a matter of weeks Boko Haram would no longer be in control of any
territory, even if the government admits that bombings and gun attacks are
likely to continue for the foreseeable future.
This
is coming on the heels of recent reports indicating that Nigerian troops at the 33 Brigade of the
Nigerian Army, yesterday concluded the dislodgment and clearing of Boko Haram
terrorists from Lame/Burra forest, which traverse Ningi and Torro Local
Government Areas of Bauchi State. A statement released by the
Director, Army Public Relations, Colonel SK Usman, disclosed that all the camps
in the forest have been destroyed.
According
to him, "During the operation that started last weekend, quite a number of
terrorists were killed, their weapons and equipment destroyed. Similarly, a
sizable number of arms, ammunitions, food stuffs, Hilux vehicles, motorcycles
and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) were recovered by the troops.
"The recovery include 3 Hilux vehicles, 12 motorcycles, 4 AK-47 rifles, 1 Fabrique Nationale rifle, 1 Small Machine Gun (SMG), 1 Police Teargas pistol, 36 Primed IEDs, 56 rifles magazines, over 500 rounds of 7.62 milimetre ammunition, 6 jerrycans of groundnut and palm oil and several IEDmaking materials amongst others.
"It will be recalled that the forest has been notorious hideout of the BHT from where they organize raids, kidnappings and attacks on hapless and innocent citizens and security forces. With this the surrounding communities would enjoy increased peace and security in their respective areas." stated Col. Sanni.

clearing of Lame /Burra forest follows other significant achievements of the
Nigerian Army in the current campaign to annihilate once and for all, the Boko
Haram sect.
