NIGERIA'S SBS: DEFENDERS OF THE DEEP

SBS members on a training exercise

Rifles in hands, eyes on the target; their minds focused on the task ahead even as sweat trickles down their necks, with the gentle breeze of the warm summer morning dancing across the face of every man in the team, the men of the SBS execute their mission with preciseness and a great air of professionalism.

With stealthy, graceful movement, they move through the different phases of the mission, tactfully recalling every move and every maneuver with relative ease; underlining the high quality training received. From infiltration, to securing the objective, and on to the final extraction, the Nigerian SBS guys leave no one in doubt, they are the real deal!

After almost one hour, the exercise is over, the men are debriefed and ushered back to their hostels.

What you just read is an excerpt from actual events at a special training exercise on riverine operations for Nigerian SBS operatives organized by the Joint Maritime Security Training Centre (JMSTC), Lagos.

The training exercise for another batch of operatives from the Nigerian Navy's Special Boat Service, more commonly known as the 'SBS', was conducted at the JMSTC's standard facility in Lagos, as part of efforts to increase the nation's capacity to secure its waterways.

Various teams of the SBS are at the moment conducting operations in the Niger-Delta to curtail the activities of bunkerers and pipeline vandals, as well as high-risk operations against the Boko Haram insurgents in the vast desert enclaves of  North-Eastern Nigeria.
