Nigeria’s war against terror
continues to record positive stories in recent times as the general narrative
now suggests the terrorists are beating a hasty retreat on several fronts.
From the rugged, fierce and
mountainous terrains of Gwoza, to the hot, deathly contours of Konduga, through
the vast table lands of the Lake Chad Basin, and on to the scorched, enigmatic
lowlands of Sambisa, Nigerian troops have remained steadfast in their fight for
the soul of the nation.
In a bid to match the resolve and
commitment of its foreign partner, ISIS, Boko Haram is toiling hard to remain
relevant in the terrorism-scheme-of-things as its fighters continue to battle
against the behemoth of the Nigerian military and the Multinational Joint Task
Force (MNJTF) on several fronts across the vast desert terrain.
Lately, the group has found it very
difficult to survive, no thanks to the revamped Nigerian Airforce whose induction
of better aircraft into the North East operation, as well as its well-rounded
approach and execution of tactics in the whole war, has greatly changed the
tide in favour of Nigeria military.
Not so long ago, in their twisted bid to carve an
Islamic Caliphate out of Nigeria, Boko Haram terrorists destroyed families,
burnt houses, razed down towns and villages, leaving pain, sorrow, death and
destruction in their wake.
The narrative at that time witnessed
Nigerian troops flee before the might of Boko Haram under the fearless
leadership of Abubakar Shekau 1.
Recent times have however witnessed
a change in script. “Die-hard” terrorists now flee the battle front in droves,
with supplies and other logistics running low.
Recent air strikes by the
Airforce and simultaneous clearing operations by the Battalions and Brigades of
7 and 8 Divisions of the Nigerian Army on Twelve (12) identified Boko Haram
Terrorists (BHT) camps and hideouts have greatly shattered their cohesion and
will.
The continuous blockade of the
terrorists’ main supply routes and arrest of their logistics suppliers has
equally caused serious economic hardship for the sect, and led to the surrender
of many terrorists in different locations.
This is not to say that Nigerian
troops have not recorded casualties of their own. In a recent attack on
Nigerian troops advancing towards Damasack, Boko Haram terrorists in Hilux vehicles mounted with Anti-Aircraft guns, in a ruthless fashion cut down nothing less than 58 soldiers, employing superb camouflage and concealment tactics while manouevering among Nigerian troops!
Incidents like this, though demoralizing, have been few and far between in recent and this lends credence to the idea that the total annihilation and defeat of the dastardly insurgents may not be far off...
