The newly commissioned officers into the Nigerian Army
will be deployed to the battlefront, Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant-General
Tukur Buratai has revealed.
General Buratai spoke at the Passing-Out-Parade of 133
cadets, including 18 females from the Nigerian Defence Acadeny in Kaduna state
recently.
The COAS said the female officers were needed at the
battlefront as well as in the background. In his words, “ we have a situation
whereby we have to bring them-female officers- on board. We have considered
several options and several implications as regards our cultural sensitivities
and the general environment”
“We need to have them where they will have to play their
role in the military. We need to address the issue of gender balance both in
peace and war times”, he said.
“Look at what we are facing in the North-East, a majority
of the Internally Displaced Persons are females and as such female officers have
important roles to play for the IDPs, to take care of them
